Africa’s Most Diverse Safari

Gorillas. Chimpanzees.
Big game. The Nile.

Uganda is one of Africa’s most biodiverse and consistently underrated safari destinations. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — holds over half the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, spread across multiple gorilla families in a dense equatorial forest that has remained largely unchanged for 25,000 years. A gorilla trekking permit here places you with one of these families for one hour: an encounter that travellers consistently describe as among the most profound of their lives.

Beyond Bwindi, Uganda delivers a wildlife experience of extraordinary variety. Kibale Forest National Park holds the highest density of primates in Africa and offers the finest chimpanzee tracking on the continent. Queen Elizabeth National Park delivers classic big game on open savannah. The source of the Nile at Jinja — where the river begins its 6,000-kilometre journey to the Mediterranean — adds a geographic and historical dimension that few other journeys can match.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest & Gorilla Trekking

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the most ancient and biodiverse forests in Africa — a 321-square-kilometre UNESCO World Heritage Site in Uganda’s southwest. The forest is home to over 400 mountain gorillas (approximately half the world’s remaining population), divided among multiple habituated families across four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each gorilla family is visited by one group of eight permits per day for one hour. Bwindi’s gorilla experience is widely regarded as more intimate and challenging than Rwanda’s — the terrain is steeper, the forest denser, and the encounter often feels more wild. Eventra advises on sector selection based on client fitness level and desired experience.

Primates

Kibale Forest & Chimpanzee Tracking

Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda holds the highest density of primates anywhere in Africa — 13 species including red colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, and the park’s headline attraction: over 1,500 chimpanzees. Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale is widely considered the best on the continent — the chimps are highly habituated, the forest well-maintained, and the guides excellent. A day in Kibale typically includes chimp tracking in the morning, a forest walk, and birding in one of the most species-rich habitats in East Africa. The park is best combined with Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth for a comprehensive western Uganda circuit.

Wildlife

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park sits in western Uganda between the Rwenzori Mountains and Lake Edward, straddling the equator. The park is known for its tree-climbing lions — a small population in the Ishasha sector that has developed the unusual habit of resting in fig trees — and for the Kazinga Channel boat cruise, which offers one of East Africa’s finest wildlife spectacles: elephants, hippos, buffalo, and crocodiles along the channel banks at close range. The park’s open savannah, woodland, and wetland habitats support exceptional birdlife alongside the Big Five. It forms the natural junction on a western Uganda circuit connecting Bwindi to Kibale.

History & Geography

The Source of the Nile — Jinja

The source of the White Nile at Jinja is where the world’s longest river begins its 6,695-kilometre journey north to Egypt and the Mediterranean. The precise location — where Lake Victoria empties into the Victoria Nile — was identified by John Hanning Speke in 1862 after years of exploration in East Africa. A boat trip to Speke’s memorial at the source adds a dimension to a Uganda journey that no safari alone provides. Jinja itself has developed into East Africa’s adventure sports capital, with white-water rafting, kayaking, and bungee jumping on the Nile for those whose Uganda itinerary has room for it. For most clients, Jinja provides the perfect final chapter before the flight home from Entebbe.
