Eventra Bespoke — East Africa — Zanzibar
A short flight from the Serengeti to a world of narrow Stone Town alleys, spice markets, dhow sailing, and white sand beaches. Zanzibar is the natural final chapter of a Tanzania safari.
The Spice Island
Zanzibar is one of those rare places that delivers on the image that preceded it. The narrow streets of Stone Town are genuinely atmospheric — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of carved wooden doors, Arab-influenced architecture, spice markets, and a harbour where dhows have traded with the East African coast for over a thousand years. The old quarter rewards slow exploration on foot, with no agenda and no itinerary.
The east coast beaches — Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu, Matemwe — are among the finest in the Indian Ocean: white sand, warm shallow water that stretches for hundreds of metres at low tide, and a reef a short distance offshore that offers some of East Africa’s best snorkelling and diving. Zanzibar is most commonly experienced as the beach extension of a Tanzania safari — a short charter flight from any Serengeti or Ngorongoro airstrip that pivots the journey from bush to ocean in under two hours.
What to Experience
Culture & History
Stone Town is one of East Africa’s most historically significant urban centres — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves over a thousand years of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and Portuguese influence in a remarkably intact medieval urban fabric. The old quarter’s narrow lanes are lined with carved wooden doors — the finest of which are among the most celebrated examples of Indo-Arabic woodcarving anywhere in the world. The former House of Wonders, the Arab Fort, the Old Dispensary, and the former slave market are the principal landmarks. Stone Town’s waterfront — particularly at dusk, when the Forodhani Gardens fill with food stalls and the dhow harbour comes alive — provides one of East Africa’s most memorable evenings.
Culture
Zanzibar’s identity as the Spice Island derives from its centuries-long role as the world’s largest producer of cloves, and its trading history in cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, nutmeg, and vanilla. A spice farm tour is a Zanzibar essential — a sensory introduction to the island’s agricultural heritage conducted among working spice plantations in the island’s interior. Dhow sailing — on traditional wooden vessels of Arab origin — is the authentic way to see Zanzibar’s coast: sunset dhow cruises from Stone Town harbour, full-day excursions to the sandbanks of the Menai Bay, or overnight trips to the more remote islands of the archipelago.
Beach
Zanzibar’s east coast — Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu, Matemwe — delivers the beach experience that Zanzibar is known for: white coral sand, turquoise water that turns jade green over the shallow reef flat at low tide, and a quality of light in the early morning and late afternoon that is difficult to find words for. The beaches are oriented to catch the tide patterns that make kite surfing world-class at Paje (one of the top kitesurfing destinations in Africa), and the snorkelling on the fringing reef is excellent throughout. Nungwi and Kendwa on the north tip offer a different experience — deeper water that does not recede with the tides, sunset-facing, and with a more social beach atmosphere.
Ocean
Zanzibar’s diving is centred on Mnemba Atoll — a private coral island and marine reserve off the northeast coast where the reef drops steeply to walls covered in soft coral. The atoll is one of the best dive sites in East Africa, with a consistently high chance of encountering green and hawksbill turtles, dolphin pods, reef sharks, and the occasional whale shark during migration season. The marine reserve status has protected the fish populations to a density that many Indian Ocean reefs no longer support. Mnemba Island itself — a private villa island of exceptional quality — is the natural accommodation for clients who want to combine a diving focus with the most intimate Zanzibar island experience available.
