Eventra Bespoke — Southern Africa — Botswana
A mokoro gliding silently through the papyrus channels of the Okavango. Elephant herds crossing the Chobe River as the sun drops. The Kalahari stretching to every horizon with nothing but stars above. Botswana offers a form of wilderness that no other country on earth replicates.
Africa's Premier Wilderness Destination
Botswana has made a deliberate choice. Rather than opening its wilderness to mass tourism, the country has built its reputation — and its economy — on low-volume, high-quality safari. The result is a network of private concessions and national parks that feel untouched, where game drives proceed without another vehicle in sight and walking safaris move through terrain that sees very few human footsteps.
At the heart of it all is the Okavango Delta — the world's largest inland delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site fed by rains far to the north that flood the Kalahari each year and transform it into a labyrinth of islands, channels, and floodplains. Wild dogs, lions, leopards, and elephant roam the private concessions of the Delta. To the north, Chobe National Park hosts elephant numbers that exceed anywhere else on earth. In the south, the Kalahari offers a completely different experience — vast, austere, and surprisingly rich with wildlife adapted to its extreme conditions.
What to Experience
Wildlife
The Okavango Delta is Botswana's centrepiece — a vast, ever-changing inland delta that floods annually and supports one of Africa's richest concentrations of wildlife. The private concessions that surround Moremi Game Reserve offer the most exclusive access: small camps with limited guest numbers, expert guides, and the freedom to walk, drive at night, and follow game without restriction. Wild dogs, lion, leopard, elephant, and hippo move through the Delta's waterways and islands year-round. Mokoro excursions — the traditional dugout canoe of the region — offer silent, intimate access to the papyrus channels and their birdlife.
Elephant Country
Chobe is home to Africa's largest elephant population — estimates suggest over 130,000 individuals within the park. The Chobe Riverfront, where the Chobe River forms the border with Namibia, delivers extraordinary elephant encounters, particularly during the dry season when herds congregate at the water's edge. Boat safaris along the Chobe River place guests at eye level with elephant, hippo, crocodile, and an extraordinary range of waterbirds. The Savuti region in the south offers lion, wild dog, and large buffalo herds in a landscape defined by an ancient, now dry riverbed.
Walking Safari
Botswana's private concessions are among Africa's best environments for walking safari — experienced guides leading small groups through wilderness that feels genuinely remote, reading tracks and signs that a vehicle would drive past. The intimacy of moving on foot through the Okavango transforms the experience entirely. Mokoro excursions add a second dimension: the papyrus-lined channels and lily-covered waterways of the Delta are best explored silently, standing in a traditional dugout poled by a guide who has navigated these waters since childhood.
Desert Safari
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in the world — a vast expanse of semi-arid grassland and ancient fossil riverbeds that few visitors ever reach. The Kalahari's wildlife has adapted to its extreme conditions: gemsbok, springbok, brown hyena, black-maned Kalahari lions, and the elusive aardvark populate a landscape that appears harsh but rewards patient observation. The game reserve's remoteness means encounters here feel completely private. Deception Valley and the Okwa Valley are among the most evocative stretches of wild land in southern Africa.
