Eventra Bespoke — Southern Africa — Mozambique
An island in the Bazaruto Archipelago ringed by water so clear the coral is visible from the surface. Dhows drifting south with the trade winds. Dugong in the seagrass beds of Bazaruto. Mozambique offers the Indian Ocean coast at its most beautiful — largely undiscovered, entirely extraordinary.
Africa's Finest Indian Ocean Coast
Mozambique stretches for over 2,500 kilometres along the Indian Ocean — a coastline of white-sand beaches, warm turquoise water, and offshore archipelagos that remain among the least visited in the world. The country has emerged from its turbulent past to become one of Africa's most compelling travel destinations, offering a quality of Indian Ocean experience that rivals the Maldives at a fraction of the footprint, on a coast that retains genuine character and depth.
The Bazaruto Archipelago, declared a national park in 1971, protects one of the last healthy populations of dugong in the western Indian Ocean — gentle, ancient animals that graze the seagrass beds in waters of extraordinary clarity. The Quirimbas Archipelago, further north near Pemba, string together 32 coral islands in a marine environment of equal richness. Private island lodges on both archipelagos offer seclusion, exceptional diving and snorkelling, dhow sailing, and the kind of stillness that becomes, in time, addictive.
What to Experience
Marine Reserve
The Bazaruto Archipelago comprises five islands — Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, and Bangue — set within a 1,430-square-kilometre marine national park that protects one of the most biodiverse marine environments on the African coast. The waters here support dugong, humpback whale, bottlenose dolphin, manta ray, whale shark, and an extraordinary range of reef fish. Diving and snorkelling in the Bazaruto is among the finest in the Indian Ocean. The private island lodges — Anantara Bazaruto, &Beyond Benguerra Island — combine exceptional accommodation with direct access to the marine park's wildlife.
Remote Archipelago
The Quirimbas Archipelago stretches for over 200 kilometres off Mozambique's northern coast — 32 coral islands, most of them uninhabited, set within a marine reserve of pristine coral reefs and seagrass beds. Ibo Island, at the archipelago's southern end, carries the weight of a complex history: a Portuguese colonial outpost, a centre of the Indian Ocean trade, and now home to a small lodge of considerable character. Medjumbe Private Island, further north, offers complete seclusion on a coral sand island barely 1.5 kilometres long. The diving here — walls, channels, and reef gardens — is exceptional and almost entirely unvisited.
Ocean Safari
Mozambique's waters offer some of the finest marine experiences in Africa. Whale sharks, the ocean's largest fish, congregate seasonally along the coast and around the islands — swimming with them in warm, clear water is a bucket-list encounter available from November through March. Humpback whales move through the Mozambique Channel between June and November, and can be observed on whale-watching excursions from both the Bazaruto and Quirimbas. The reef systems around both archipelagos support outstanding snorkelling and diving. Manta rays are a reliable presence around the Bazaruto throughout the year.
Sailing
The traditional dhow — the wooden sailing vessel that has moved people and cargo across the Indian Ocean for centuries — is the most evocative way to move between the islands of Mozambique. Sunset dhow cruises, day-trips to uninhabited sandbanks, and multi-day sailing journeys between the Quirimbas islands are all possible from the right bases. The private island lodges of Mozambique offer a quality of seclusion and service that is rare anywhere on earth: meals on the beach, snorkelling off the lodge jetty, and the satisfaction of days structured entirely around the ocean and the tides.
